1. What areas do you cover?
We are based in Warrington in Cheshire, and also cover the surrounding areas of Runcorn, Widnes, Frodsham, Helsby, Leigh, St Helens and Liverpool. If you are unsure if this includes you, drop us an email here and we would be happy to help!
2. What kind of training methods do you use?
We only use fair and kind methods revolving mostly around clicker training and other positive reinforcement methods. We do not promote the use of force, aversive equipment or physical punishment as a training tool. We seek to help foster understanding and trust between dog and owner through communication, consistency and a few cubes of cheese or chicken can always help!
3. Why do you only do 1-2-1 lessons?
We feel that dogs, especially underdogs, can often have a hard enough time with training itself, let alone in an unusual or alien environment such as a training class full of other distractions, strange people and smells, and lots of noise and potential to be unsettled. Alongside this we feel that learning can often be most effectively managed if done in a calm, and familiar environment, as well as helping dog and owner alike to learn what works and doesn’t work in the place they spend the majority of their time!
4. What do you expect from me during lessons?
Signing up to lessons is already a great start! However we find that lessons go best if we have a relatively quiet space to work, if you and your dog are ready to start straight away and if distractions are kept to a minimum. We welcome family inclusion and believe training can only be truly consistent if each member of the family knows what to do, so we encourage partners, spouses and children to participate when appropriate to do so. Lastly a bit of patience and enthusiasm goes a long way, we will help to guide you through the journey of training, however we will also seek to set realistic expectations of what we can achieve for you and your dog in the time we have booked together.
5. Do you cover all behavioural problems?
At the Underdog Trainer we mostly deal with training and communication between dogs and their owners. We also believe that many behavioural issues in the future can be avoided or reduced by having a solid foundation of trust, understanding and training built up in the early days of your relationship. If there are behavioural problems that we feel may need a different approach, or more focused behavioural consultations we will always let you know, and will help to refer you on to professionals who use similarly positive methods, making sure you find the help you need and we will continue to offer training during or after any behavioural work.
6. Do you only train rescue or rehomed dogs?
Not at all! Here at the Underdog Trainer we pride ourselves on looking to help all dogs and their owners. Just because a dog hasn’t been in kennels or a rescue environment, it doesn’t mean that they deserve any less training, understanding and communication.
7. Do you train puppies?
Yes! We feel that providing a solid basis of training and understanding from Day 1 is crucial to the development of the relationship between puppy (soon to be Dog) and owner. We can also offer Pre Arrival packages for puppies too! Feel free to drop us a line here with any enquiries.
8. What happens if I can’t make our lesson?
We will always try and work with you to reschedule where possible, however our time is precious together so we do encourage owners to try and stick to appointments as much as possible. For our full policy on cancellations, click here.
